1956 JAGUAR MKI 2.4. THE ‘ENDEAVOUR' TV SERIES CAR

If this smart MkI 2.4 Jaguar looks familiar, that's because it was the automotive star of several series of ITV's Endeavour, the Inspector Morse TV prequel that began in 2012. In the detective show, it is used by both the main characters Morse (Shaun Evans) and DI Thursday (Roger Allam). Chassis number S900939 was the 939th car to be built from of a total production of 19,992 MkIs between Sept 1955 and Sept 1959, and is believed to be one of the earliest surviving 2.4 saloons still in road-worthy condition. 

Registered in April 1956, the 2483cc luxury saloon comes to us direct from the film car supplier. Its last MoT expired in March 2018, but as an historic vehicle, it no longer requires annual testing. The car was restored in the late 1980s/early 1990s and was a well-known vehicle on the show and event circuit before its TV career. The odometer now shows 95,183 miles. A brief history of the car, included in the paperwork file, which helps confirm the mileage and that the car was off the road between mid-1975 (when its mileage was recorded as 36,980) and mid-1990 (when its restoration was completed). In 1999 it had an unleaded head fitted and was fitted with an overdrive unit.

The paperwork includes the V5C, period Jaguar parts catalogue, service manual and mounted magazine advert and a large album with many photographs of the restoration between February 1989 and May 1990, together with some of the magazine/newspaper and event appearances of the machine. There's also a Jaguar dating letter, old buff, green and V5 logbooks, 1974 and 1975 tax discs, petrol ration book, lubrication chart and two owner's manuals, along with a box of magazines and newspapers relating to the MkI, many featuring this car in particular. The MoT certificates date from 1990 to 2008 and 2012 to 2018, and there are a handful of 21st century bills, plus instructions from a previous owner on how best to start the car from cold.
