1928 AUSTIN SIXTEEN LIGHT-SIX DOCTORS COUPE BY GORDON AND CO

The Austin Sixteen was introduced in 1927 as a medium saloon sitting within Austin's range above the Seven and Twelve models. The six-cylinder engine was new but with similarities to that fitted to the Twenty, with its timing chain at the rear of the block. The design was up-to-date for the era, with the gearbox mounted in-unit with the engine, and semi elliptic springs all round for the suspension. Rolling chassis went to coachbuilders such as Swallow, Taylor, Duple and Mulliner as well as smaller producers such as Arrow and Boyd Carpenter, along with the firm responsible for this Doctor's Coupé Sixteen, Gordon & Co, who were based in Birmingham, and built bodies on many different chassis from various manufacturers, including Ford, Chevrolet and Austin. This delightful Doctor's Coupé is one of only two ever built on an Austin Sixteen chassis by Gordon & Co and currently the only known survivor. It was restored a few years ago and the engine was rebuilt in 2006 by CK Motor Engineers at a cost of over £3000. The coachwork is in good condition, the fabric covering also good, taut and rip-free, The wings and bonnet have some small imperfections but still present well, while the interior has a wonderful, welcoming patina to it. The car has seen minimal use in recent years although the vendor informs us that it ‘runs and drives nicely and starts immediately'. This probably now unique Austin was registered in September 1928 and comes with its current V5C plus original buff logbook, a handful of invoices (including the one for the engine rebuild), some tax discs and MoT certificates from 2006 and 2008. There's also the starting handle and carriage keys included.
